Today Jacobs' brainchild, FLW Tour (named after bass-boat pioneer Forrest L. Wood), has moved tournament bass fishing from the swampy border of sports to deep in the mainstream. Each week pro fishermen aboard boats that resemble floating billboards--welcome to BASSCAR--seek out big fish and big bucks. There are now four separate bass tours and a fifth for walleye that began this year. At this year's championship, to be held on Lake Champlain in Plattsburgh, N.Y., the winner will net $250,000. Says Irwin: "I'm sitting here feeling pretty good...

This all-star brainchild of Damon Albarn from Blur; Dan (the Automator) Nakamura; Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz from Tom Tom Club; and Tank Girl animator Jamie Hewlett is technically a concept album: the CD plays a cartoon on your computer. Well, forget the 'toon and listen to the tunes, for this is the most imaginative pop record of the year. Nakamura's beats are wonderfully atmospheric and danceable; Del Tha Funky Homosapien's playful rhymes are the perfect foil to Albarn's ennui-filled vocals, and Weymouth's giant bass whomps away throughout...

...political debate is, in an important way, beside the point, for the myth transcends ideology. This is seen most plainly in the Met's Jackie Kennedy show, the purest display of Kennedy mythology in years. "The White House Years" is a joint brainchild of Caroline Kennedy and the late curator Richard Martin. They strove mightily to give the show an academic and historical gloss. But, really, it is a show about great clothes. And about artifacts, sacred objects assembled to evoke an irretrievable past. Outsize pictures of Jackie and her husband hang from the walls as backdrop for the actual...

...Former Napster devotees - 60 million of my closest filesharing friends - have been glumly awaiting The One from the moment Shawn Fanning's brainchild felt the back of the music label's legal hand. BearShare, LimeWire, Aimster, FreeNet - all of these alternative MP3 swapping services have had their moment in the media spotlight. Plenty of pundits, yours truly included, were eager to anoint at least one of them as Napster's successor . All had their own get-out-of-jail-free cards, in that they had no central server (unlike Napster) and therefore no way of knowing you were deliberately seeking...

Part of Generations of Hope, a nonprofit organization, Hope Meadows is the brainchild of University of Illinois sociologist Brenda Krause Eheart, who got the idea after five years of research into the adoptions of older children, which she discovered often failed. The key problem, she found, was that even the best foster families felt isolated. Without constant, accessible support, they found the task overwhelming. Eheart also fondly recalled having older neighbors who were devoted to her family when her children were young. In the early '90s, when some politicians were promoting a return to orphanages and group homes, Eheart says...
