That's exactly what happened last week. Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden who had earlier shown that hormonelike pheromones stimulate the human hypothalamus--a part of the brain that governs sexual arousal--took the experiment one provocative step further. Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they reported that gay men don't respond to the chemicals the same way that straight men do. "It clearly substantiates the idea that there's a biological substrate for sexual orientation," says Dean Hamer, a geneticist at the National Institutes of Health and the author of Science...
...scientists isolated two substances suspected of being human pheromones--an estrogen-like chemical distilled from women's urine and a testosterone-related chemical derived from male sweat. Using both MRI and PET scans, the researchers found that women registered the female pheromone in the smell-processing part of the brain. But when women sniffed male pheromones, their hypothalamuses lit up as well. In men, the results were exactly the opposite...
Ambitious as all this is, Wright and his brain trust have taken pains to make the game as fast and easy to run as possible. It will also be interactive: all players' species will coexist in the same galaxy, via the Internet. The game itself will decide, say, which planet to place them on, going by what will make the most interesting combinations. "Until now, we've used the computer as an automated opponent," says Wright. "Now we're trying to give it the intelligence to run the show." The result, Wright believes, will hook in an even wider circle...
...home in Baghdad. Because of the lack of medicines and equipment at the ER, both men are still at risk for secondary infections. But they are in the care of their families and are expected to recover. They were the fortunate ones. Waleed, the university student, suffered brain trauma from the shrapnel to his head and remains at the Yarmouk Hospital, another victim whose only mistake was to be on the wrong side of the road in the morning...
