But Daniell's argument is not nearly as compelling as the relatives and acquaintances she uses for illustration: the cousin who took to bed for 20 years after her father forbade her to marry the man she loved, the car-crazy boyfriend whose kisses tasted of brake fluid, the professor who had an arrowed heart containing the legend "Mother" tattooed on his groin...

Had "a reasonably attentive driver" actually approached the bridge at 20 m.p.h. or so, the Digest asserted, he would have seen the bridge in time to brake safely to a stop. The point seems secondary; whatever Kennedy's speed that fateful night, it obviously was too fast for the washboard-like road leading up to the bridge...
