Next time you reward Rex for fetching the paper, leave the doggy biscuits in the cupboard and pour him a cold beer instead. Thanks to one Dutch inventor, parched pooches now have their very own brand of booze. Arjan Berendsen first got the idea for Kwispelbier (Waggy Tail Ale in Dutch) after an afternoon's hunting. "I felt bad that the dog could only drink water while my wife and I were enjoying our beer. After all, he'd done all the work...
...patient owners. Founders Donald and Doris Fisher, along with their son and interim CEO Robert Fisher, own about 33% of Gap shares and have never seemed interested in selling their baby; they want it fixed. One possibility: breaking up the company into three more-nimble parts, with each brand focused on a specific customer demographic. "The combination is overly complex and unmanageable," says Todd Slater, managing director at Lazard Capital Markets. Whether or not it remains one intact company, industry experts say Gap will have to get back to the fashion basics at its flagship or risk losing even...
...good sign. It wasn't long ago that Jaguar was considered the Lada of luxury models, so prone to breakdowns that mechanics could send their kids to college on the repair bills. The XKR is the supercharged version of the XK sports car, which was completely redesigned for the 2007 model year. The outgoing edition had scarcely been updated in a decade, and Jaguar overhauled everything from the sheet metal to the transmission. Instead of steel, the new XK is sheathed in high-strength aluminum, forming a shell that's 30% stiffer and 10% lighter. The XKR's V-8 engine got a boost, producing...
...arms shipments were a particularly galling slap in the face for Jordan's King Hussein, whose most recent attempt to buy U.S. weaponry was turned down by the Reagan Administration as politically too risky. Leaders of other moderate Arab states, who live in daily fear of the brand of radical Islamic fundamentalism that Iran is sworn to export, were appalled that Washington would consider giving so much as a bow and arrow to Tehran. Last week, in an interview with the semiofficial Cairo daily Al Ahram, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak predicted that the arms deal will lead to "grave consequences...
