Earlier, some 225 miles to the southwest of Johannesburg, police in the Orange Free State town of Brandfort raided the house of Winnie Mandela, the wife of Nelson Mandela. They arrested 30 people after firing tear gas and rubber bullets into a crowd. Mrs. Mandela, who has been banished to the remote location for the past eight years, was away at the time of the raid. Since 1962 Mandela has lived under various banning orders restricting her activities. In 1977 she was banished from her Soweto house to Brandfort, in a remote area of the Orange Free State.
