...Zealanders equal - or do Maori deserve special status? The question nags at the nation like a toothache. But in militantly harmonious New Zealand, probing it can be painful. Most non-Maori would rather have root-canal work than be called a racist. But when Don Brash became leader of the conservative National Party in October, he thought the country "desperately needed to have an adult discussion" about race. So the former Reserve Bank governor, whose wife is a Chinese New Zealander, gave it one. In a speech on Jan. 27, he said the government's obsession with the 1840 Treaty...

...M.B.A. at Harvard in 1982, Dimon rejoined Weill, as his personal assistant, at American Express. Three years later, when Weill left American Express after losing a power struggle, Dimon followed his boss into professional exile rather than stay in a safe job. As they scouted possible acquisition targets, the brash 29-year-old was already speaking his mind. The academic experts' voice-overs backfired to make sex seem even more animalistic and desperate. Furthermore...

Dean's anger is tactical, not visceral. His brash, peremptory manner has camouflaged the fact that he is by far the best politician among the 2004 Democrats--which is one reason Republicans should postpone the champagne if Dean wins the nomination. The doctor diagnosed the Democratic electorate before any of his opponents did, and he shaped his candidacy to fit the mood, which was, in a word, ballistic. Furthermore, Dean understood that party activists were not just angry at George W. Bush; they were furious with the Democrats in Washington who were letting a minority-elected President have...
