...forces behind the film were a curious mixture of talents who eschewed such a cynical approach. It started with the Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein. An urbane, failed drama student, he had found his metier with the Beatles. He discovered them brash and raw, and without changing their music he shaped them and made them presentable for a mass audience that suckled on the television tube. No TV show in Britain (let alone America) would have embraced the leather-clad Beatles. The foppish suits and Olde World charm of that little bow at the end of each set sugar-coated...

...years in Congress, Lott has swung between these two personas, at times brash and battle hungry, at others cordial and accommodating. He has been blasted for having what one colleague called "foot-in-mouth disease." He's already shown a knack for playing psychologically mucked-up characters in Good Will Hunting and The Talented Mr. Ripley, so the emotionally scarred Junuh isn't too much of a stretch. The character walks a fine line between brash confidence and paralyzing fear-and by making this confusion seem genuine, Damon succeeds in winning the audience's sympathy. What impresses me most about Damon, though, is his linguistic versatility. After all, not many actors can flip between a Bostonian accent and a Southern drawl with such apparent ease...
