...older time, might well have put County Donegal up in arms and stained the waters of Lough Swilly pink with men's blood. Yonder they came, eight men of England's navy and that same young duke that married the king's daughter, strolling bold as brass into free Eire. "We want a navy snack," says they, marching into the Green Bay at Buncrana. "We want a typical navy snack, with plenty of steak and chips and don't say nothin' to anyone about the dook." Then off they go to the local...

...Rhine wine, with a fraulein on either side, swaying to the music. It first turned up at the Cologne Carnival in 1935, called Du Kannst Nicht Treu Sein. On the fringes were a few on-the-fringe journalists. Columnist Earl Wilson, Debutante Virginia Leigh and Socialist Candidate Norman Thomas (reporting for the Denver Post...

...screen, this unpretentious yarn has been given standard Hollywood treatment, i.e., the daydreamer is now an heiress and her moderately subtle character is interpreted, with full brass, by rambunctious Betty Hutton. Playing her bookish boy friend, Macdonald Carey behaves more like the president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. All in all, the movie manages to destroy the original play's tenderness and its moral ("facts are better than dreams"*). Dream Girl gets by, with little to spare, on the strength of some frantically energetic scenes showing Betty as a flaming señorita, as a South Seas trollop...
