First-time director Andrew Niccol brings considerable visual style and an intriguing premise to this story of a Brave New World society in which the pre-planned, genetically made-to-order elite get the honors and opportunities, and the natural births are relegated to the grunt work. Ethan Hawke plays Vincent Freeman, a "natural" who borrows the identity a brahmin to fulfill his lifelong dream of leading a mission to outer space. Although the film suffers from unevenness, sketchy characters and muted acting, Niccol's striking images make it all easy to overlook. --Lynn...

...Reilly, as the title character, delivers a thoughtful but slightly static performance: he doesn't quite sink his teeth into the Lear-like, madness Titus teeters toward, but he does manage to convince as a brave, basically well-meaning guy who nature probably intended to be a hero. Amaechi chooses to take a playful, goblin-like approach to the treacherous, unrepentant Aaron, which tends to diminish him as a personification of pure evil: he's more Puck than Iago. ...other hand, some constitutional monarchs have been noted for their brave support of democracy against dictatorship, and, in the Cold War, for serving as a bastion against communism. For instance, King Juan Carlos of Spain has been greatly admired since 1981, when he intervended to prevent a military coup from taking over the Spanish parliament. For Cambodia, the exiled but widely respected King Norodom Sihanouk has been a ray of hope representing democracy, as this summer militant leader Hun Sen crashed the fragile Cambodian peace that had been set up by the United Nations...

...keeping with its premise, Groundlings offers many opportunities for audience participation. Roulleau repeatedly asks the audience to storm out in protest, or to help him overcome the Bailiff. At times, the actors seemed hesitant as to how to respond when no brave audience member was forthcoming. However, the audience's unwillingness to intercede actually strengthened the play's premise, further emphasizing the audience's guilt...
