Smack dab in the middle of downtown Seattle the early stages of construction on the city's new opera house make the entire block across from the Post Office between Second and Third Streets look like a war zone. Where the sidewalks were, plywood planks support the braver pedestrians and piles of dirt and rubble spill out into the edges of the street. Seattle's fleet of mountain biking bicycle couriers have a heyday of dodging the construction runoff, but for most downtown traffic, the construction makes getting around that block an arduous task...
...give the U.S. women the gold medal in the gymnastics team competition. She didn't even need to vault, as arithmetic turned out, but no matter. Strug did more than win a gold medal. She added another word to the Olympic credo: Citius, altius, fortius, audacius. Faster, higher, stronger, braver...
...sure, in the first eight days of the 16-day competition, but none as compelling as the Seven Sisters of U.S. gymnastics (see page 42). In this ghost town on Saturday, one could only wish that they might magically reappear to make all of Atlanta--spectator, Olympian, official--braver. After all, in just a few hours last week, they had crystallized and reminded us of the intent of the Games...
...years it took her just to get into the Citadel [SOCIETY, Aug. 28]. Had her classmates at the school been kinder and more welcoming, she probably could have made it.
