...touch of bravura was uniquely Swarttouw, but the candor about voluntary death was typically Dutch. While euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide remain taboo subjects in much of Europe and are contentious topics in the U.S., they have been openly debated and researched for more than 20 years in Holland, which has a record of pragmatism in dealing with thorny social issues like drugs and abortion. Euthanasia is still, under Dutch law, a crime punishable by up to 12 years in prison. But in fact, the Netherlands has tolerated the practice for more than a decade, and the number of cases...

...Liszt's second concerto, in A, where Yukiko Sekino '99, the winner of HRO's Concerto Competition, dwarfed her colleagues with her huge technique. Though her double notes left something to be desired (and whose don't?), her fearless and flawless octaves, the sine quibus non of Lisztian bravura, eradicated this quibble. A duet passage with principal cellist Steve Cho '97 was captivating, but the otherwise bland ensemble writing made it impossible for the orchestra to advertise itself. Expect Brenda Blethyn, a teary tornado as the mother, to be in an aisle seat on Oscar night...

...singing voice too weak or too sour to carry, doesn't show its face here at all. Andrew Burlinson as Frederic, the Pirate Apprentice, projects with a sweet clarity, and Sarah Cullins as Mabel, his romantic counterpart and the General's daughter, banters back with coy and subtle bravura of her own. And if Adam Smith as the Major-General Stanley is outshined a little vocally, he more than compensates with his bizarre--but somehow nonetheless appropriate--Major-General gyrations...

...think you were coming to see?" But this misunderstanding, or missed expectation, epitomizes the contradiction that existed between the venue and the band on Sunday night, and also the reason why it became more awkward and discomfiting to experience Red House Painters live, in spite of their bravura performances, than in the cold comforts of a twin (a TWIN!? for God's sake) bed with a shamefully broad amount of space...
