Norman Y. Yao ’09 received the 2009 Captain Jonathan Fay Prize from the Radcliffe Institute for breakthrough research on the mechanical properties of cellular networks on Wednesday. Yao was selected for the honor from among the 83 winners of the Thomas T. Hoopes Prize for the quality and impact of his senior thesis, which describes an innovative scientific technique to measure the properties of neurofilaments, one of the structural elements found in nerve cells. "More than anything, I am very humbled and honored to have been selected out of such an amazing group of [Hoopes Prize winners...
...Robert Lanza, chief scientific officer at Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), reported today in the journal Cell that his team has created stem cells using human skin cells and four proteins. The innovation builds on the breakthrough discovery in 2006 by Shinya Yamanaka, who similarly coaxed human skin cells to revert to a pristine, embryonic state by introducing four key genes into the cells, piggybacked on viruses. However, some of those genes are known to cause cancer, which made Yamanaka's stem cells - known as induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells - unsuitable for human use. Early reports of a possible deal buoyed hopes for a breakthrough, but so far no agreement has emerged, and the Iraqi government in Baghdad still officially considers any oil exports from Kurdish territory illegal...

There are a few moments when you sense the nervous tension inherent in an actress trying to make a breakthrough that could and should change her career, but they are outweighed by the number of times she's in command. She also has the most memorable scene involving a household pet since the time Christopher sat on Adriana's dog in the The Sopranos - this one's funnier. (From...
...kick-start the sputtering U.S. auto industry, while saving the equivalent of some 1.8 billion barrels of oil, it also raises hopes that the Obama Administration will be able to forge a compromise on the tricky matter of a national cap on greenhouse-gas emissions. "It's an enormous breakthrough for national legislation," says Vickie Patton, a senior attorney for the Environmental Defense Fund. "It ends years of polarization on extraordinarily difficult issues and leaves us with a sense of progress." (See the 50 worst cars of all time...
