Popular wisdom has it that Gwen Stefani’s painful breakup with fellow No Doubter Tony Kanal was the ultimate cause of No Doubt’s rise to stardom. Previous albums Tragic Kingdom and Return of Saturn were propelled by angsty tracks like “Don’t Speak,” “Ex Girlfriend” and “Simple Kind of Life,” inspired by Stefani’s heartache. But with steady beau Gavin Rossdale and a chummy relationship with Kanal, Stefani seems to be doing just fine...
...walked off with Billboard's Artist of the Year award, but days later headlines blared that the trio was splitting. Yes? No! Mathew Knowles, controller of Destiny--creatively speaking--and father to lead singer Beyonce, 20 (at center, of course), is adamant that it's a break, not a breakup. "All are exploring solo opportunities," he insists. "We're giving the sound a break." Ringo Starr had his affability. Paul McCartney had his winking charm. What Harrison possessed was something more unexpected in a rock star: the air of a man in search of mature understandings...
...Such confusion would end with the band's acrimonious breakup, announced in 1970. For Harrison, the split opened the door to artistic liberation. He had been piling up songs for months - years - songs that couldn't be squeezed onto Beatles albums, brimful as they were with Lennon and McCartney's efforts. Now, in a work that is the very definition of magnum opus, Harrison poured forth the three-disc set All Things Must Pass. (A 30th-anniversary reissue earlier this year only confirmed that this was Harrison's masterpiece...
