...first Tuesday of his second season on the air was a big day for Will Truman. Will, the male half of NBC's Will & Grace, went on a date, after spending last year setting an endurance record for getting over a painful breakup. The date was with a hunky bookstore clerk we saw for all of five teasing seconds, but it was a date nonetheless. His other accomplishment: the Top-20 W&G beat its straight-couple neighbor, ABC's Dharma & Greg, in the first round of a pitched battle for ratings...

Bell Atlantic, the northeastern offspring of the 1984 breakup of AT&T, has formally applied to the FCC for permission to take on its old Ma and offer long-distance service to its New York customers. Sometimes people come into your life, and then it's time to make a change. This is one of those times." Is there a chance of reconciliation? Says Ross: "I would always like to think there's a chance, but I have a feeling...

...market have its way, the FCC has temporarily stayed those rules. The deal will be pricey for AT&T: $23 billion would go to finance the cash part of the purchase. Another $1.5 billion would go to Comcast, since MediaOne has already agreed to pay Comcast $1.5 billion in breakup fees. But if the deal goes through, and the Internet goes cable, positioning like this will make some widows and orphans very rich indeed...
