...house proves to be not single but multiple, and it is all wound up with the gothic flourish of an ambiguous murder. The prose in this first novel by Mary Ellin Barrett, daughter of Composer Irving Berlin, sometimes rises a little too high on its toes and ends up breathless. But the book is saved from the Venus flytrap of ladies' magazine fiction by its easy intimacy with the ambiance of those days of picnic baskets and tennis flannels. The author has a sophisticated sense of the tensions that show among even the most beautiful people - like the stringy...
Happily, Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.5 matched the brilliance of the Mozart. Harpsichordist G. S. Rousseau ripped through his part with a technical virtuosity that left listeners breathless. His concern with speed caused him to rush in all three movements, but his control and clear phrasing helped make up for this. Violinist Marylou Speaker and flutist Leslie Claff both played very sensitively, executing their imitative sections elegantly. Miss Speaker's tone was rich and warm; Miss Claff's was clear but, unfortunately, was often covered by the orchestra. The strings, especially the violins, were astonishing: their sound blossomed...
...Julia Child [Nov. 25] Her French Chef, on WTTW, is a regular in our house. Even the children-five of them, 14 down to four-prefer it to the tripe generally offered. I don't really know if they're learning anything, but they enjoy her breathless manner of speaking, are fascinated by the way she tosses around whole fish and cuts of meat, and are rather glad they don't have to do dishes after she cooks: "All those pots...
...notion is amusing but clumsily worked out. Aside from some radiant color photography by Raoul Coutard (Jules and Jim, Breathless), Clift is the only interesting thing in this sluggish and somewhat muddled movie. But the interest in Clift, who died of a heart attack soon after this picture was completed, will be mostly morbid. Suffice it to say that his acting, though competent, is less striking than his appearance. He looks like a man who knows he is in bad health-and in a bad picture. It provides an undistinguished conclusion to a distinguished career...
Into Business. The TV series, breathless with jump cuts, stop action, asides, speedups, titles, slow motion, and every other photographic gimmick that the Beatles people ever thought of, is doing well enough to be assured of a good run. Bright, unaffected and zany, it romps around haunted houses and toy factories with no intention of making things all add up. The boys more or less sing two or three songs per show, while the camera follows them in surrealistic pandemonium aboard everything from unicycles to epicycles. The show ranks 53rd in the Nielsens, but it has 32% of the audience...
