This spring’s Sexpressions — oops, sorry, Expressions show was not for the faint of heart (or for any individual with a heart condition, for that matter). Hips gyrate, sweaty bodies thrust up against each other, breathless...did we mention these are Harvard students? The dancers get hotter and heavier surrounded by a packed crowd than they probably do in the privacy of their dorm rooms...
...does Alyson Hannigan's Sally measure up? Answer: She gives it everything she's got. No stranger to sex jokes after her work in the smutty American Pie films, Hannigan starts quietly, reclining in her seat and moaning softly; then she moves into second gear with a brace of breathless "Oh Gods" and "Yeah, right theres"; climaxing with a series of table slaps and shrieks. Alas, this is about the only point in the show that matches the verve and vivacity of the original. You can see how it must have looked on paper. Take a dialogue-heavy, witty film...
...intercutting many scenes of the three of them with the movies that inspired the scene, such as the three of them racing through the Louvre attempting to beat the time set in Bande à Part (Band Of Outsiders), or mimicking the classic streetwalk of Jean Seabourg in Breathless. These are obviously devices more geared to movie dorks like myself; if seeing a clip from Shock Corridor, Samuel Fuller’s 1963 opus, brings a smile of recognition to your lips, there are at least some pleasures in this flick...
