...first scene of “The Yellow Handkerchief,” the viewer is introduced to Brett Hanson (William Hurt), a middle-aged oilrig worker affecting a rougher Dr. Phil, recently released from prison and heading to the local convenience store for a beer. A minute or two later, he meets up with a heartbroken young woman (Kristen Stewart of “Twilight” fame) and an odd, lanky teenage boy from California (Eddie Redmayne) who is pursuing her. Chance unites the three in a single car crossing a river by ferry, and when the ferry?...
...That kind of buyer's remorse has Florida conservatives crowing. "The entire Crist operation appears to be in a death spiral," says GOP consultant Brett Doster, an ally of Crist's conservative predecessor, Jeb Bush, whose fans say Crist's centrist agenda has betrayed Bush's legacy. "It's hard to imagine at this point what he could possibly do to reverse this." ...revenge for Martine. He's been pestering everyone in the café, and he's about as sexy as Pee-wee Herman. Even the kid who dumped Martine looks baffled by her desperation. It's as wrecked...

Director Udayan Prasad keeps hyping the possibility by cutting to unsettling flashbacks featuring Maria Bello as Brett's former boss and crush. Is Brett wounded or the wounder? That boilerplate suspense technique is too obviously manipulative to have the creepy power of Gordy's resentful glances. (See the top 10 movies...
...Martine got in Gordy's car in the first place. "To try to make someone care about me," she answers. Such self-knowledge is a fine thing, and the movie is pleased enough with itself to suggest that she's gained this in the time she spends with Brett and Gordy. Or at least she's learned to voice the truth. On paper that might have made me scoff - Martine is such a sketch of the bad girl in need - but Hurt and Redmayne sold me on the notion. As for the yellow handkerchief of the title, I'd have...
