...their safe disposal is found, yet another dilemma looms. Idaho Governor Cecil Andrus, a former Secretary of the Interior, last week ordered state police to stop any shipments of nuclear military wastes from entering the state. Since 1952 some 75% of the defense industry's low-level radioactive brew has been deposited in 120,000 drums and 11,000 boxes on a "temporary" basis at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, waiting for a new federal Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad, N.Mex., to open. There, the stuff will be buried in 3,000-ft.-deep salt formations...
Milwaukee (91-71, AL East, third): The Brew Crew was brewing towards the end of the season, but without a healthy Paul Molitor (.353), Milwaukee will fizz. Lefthander Teddy Higuera (18-10) is a quality starter, but will reliever Dan Plesac falter like he did last year? Rob Deer, who hit 28 homers last year, struck out 186 times to set a league record. Prascak makes him a dilivery boy for Pinocchio's Pizza, a change that provides plenty of material for the rest of this strange brew of banality, magic and myth. For instance, Euridice's fatal step is taking a bite of a mushroom slice. In one of Prascak's sillier insertions, her death occurs after she hands out several freshly delivered slices to the audience...
...microbrew industry already has its rivalries. The highest status is claimed by the smallest producers. Uli Bennewitz, co-owner of the Weeping Radish Bavarian Restaurant & Brewery on Roanoke Island, N.C., prides himself on his Hopfen beer, which is so fresh it never enters a keg. "We brew it in one room and pipe it right into the next," he says. That might seem much too limited to Jim Koch, whose Boston Beer Co. sold 24,000 bbl. of Samuel Adams lager last year. Purists may look askance at Samuel Adams because it is a "contract" brand, actually brewed by Koch...
