Trying a different strategy, Coors is taking on two foreign brewers as partners. Last week Masters Beer, which is jointly produced by Coors, Canada's Molson Breweries and West Germany's Kaltenberg, went on sale. Coors brews Masters at its Golden, Colo., plant using a recipe formulated by the three partners. Initially, the beer will be available only in Boston, Miami, Washington and Columbus. Priced 25 cents higher per six-pack than American superpremium beers like Michelob, Masters is likely to be a brew for an upscale restaurant rather than a neighborhood tavern...

When Coca-Cola Chairman Roberto Goizueta announced in April that the company was changing the secret formula of Coke, he proclaimed that "the best has been made even better." After public outrage forced Goizueta to bring back the original brew as Coca-Cola Classic in July, he still hoped that the sweeter taste of new Coke would catch on. So far, however, the majority of Coke buyers seem to prefer the Real Thing. Many firms now penalize or fire those who drink on the job, and a few even ban drinking at company picnics. A provision in the new contract between Anheuser-Busch and the Teamsters and other unions is gradually eliminating beer breaks and free lunchtime brew over a one-year "transition" period. Instead, 9,000 employees will be given free six-packs to take home or may choose additional benefits, like more health insurance.
