Shelest and Voronov were the first Politburo members to be fired for political reasons since Brezhnev took over. Their fall was not unexpected. Last May, Shelest, 65, was removed from the leadership of the Ukrainian Party after he was believed to have opposed President Nixon's visit to Moscow.
