...Demonstration. Just as if his emissaries had not aided the changes, Soviet Party Boss Leonid Brezhnev sent his warm congratulations to Husák. So did most of the other East Bloc leaders. Predictable protests came from the West, the loudest of them voiced by the West European Communists, who had seen in Dubček's liberal form of Communism an opportunity to enhance their own appeal to voters in their own countries...
Ominous Visitor. Overcome by a vicarious sense of triumph, a huge and excited crowd swarmed into Prague's Wenceslas Square. One happy hockey fan carried a poster that read BREZHNEV 3, DUBČEK 4. The crowd chanted, "We've beaten you this time!" Someone shouted, "The Russian coach will go to Siberia!" Suddenly a brick smashed through the plate-glass display window at the office of Aeroflot, the Soviet airline. A small group dashed through the opening and began heaving furniture and filing cabinets onto a bonfire in the street. To make matters worse, the dem- onstrations...
...Bullies. Until a short time ago, the Chinese lumped together the Eastern Europeans and the Soviets as unpardonable revisionists. Now, siding wholeheartedly with the Eastern Europeans, Peking condemns the Russians for their political and economic domination of the East bloc. Bemoaning the fate of Czechoslovakia, Chinese propagandists attack the Brezhnev policy of limited sovereignty for socialist countries as "a philosophy of bullies...
...example of that leverage came at last month's Warsaw Pact Conference in Budapest, when Rumanian President Nicolae Ceausescu refused Soviet demands to condemn China for the border troubles. Exploded Soviet Party Boss Leonid Brezhnev: "You are as bad as the bastard Hoxha [the pro-Peking party boss of Albania]!" By the same token, the Rumanian, Hungarian and Czechoslovak parties are likely to assert their independence at the planned Moscow meeting by attempting to block any Soviet plan to excommunicate the Chinese from the world Communist movement...
Katushev in Motion. Katushev's international debut took place when he accompanied Brezhnev to Prague in January 1968, in a vain attempt to rescue the Stalinist regime of Antonin Novotny. Since then, he has been frequent -and unwelcome-visitor to Czechoslovakia. At Cierna, where the Russians and Czechoslovaks fell out over Prague's liberal line, Czechoslovak National Assembly President Josef Smrkovsky reportedly observed that Katushev argued the Soviet case "with the toughness of two Molotovs put together." At year's end Katushev was in charge of the delegation from the Kremlin that made an inspection tour...
