Story is that the Treasury officials did actually sound out British authorities early this spring on the possibilities of cutting gold prices but the news leaked out in London, causing such uproar that the idea was dropped like a hot brick. Whatever the value of that story, a quick glance at gold figures is enough to convince anyone that the U. S. is holding the bag. During the past year the Treasury has bought $800,000,000 worth of gold, none of which it needed. Imports last week pushed total U. S. gold stocks above the staggering figure...

...Deutschland bombing, five Nazi warships flying Swas tika battle flags from their main trucks drew up off the harbor entrance. Flagship was reported to be the Admiral Scheer, sister of the Deutschland. For over an hour this squadron proceeded to pour high explosive shells into the stucco & light brick houses of Almeria. Leftist shore batteries replied until they ran out of ammunition. Then under a smoke screen the Nazi fleet, honor satisfied, steamed off towards Melilla in Rightist Morocco...

...vast crowds in Indianapolis last week, two men were killed and four injured in two spectacular automobile crashes during races preliminary to the 25th annual 500-mi. Sweepstakes on Memorial Day. When this final event came, however, the 150,000 yelling fans clustered around the 2½-mi. brick oval did not get the ultimate thrill. Death took a holiday. Of 33 starters, 14 dropped out with motor trouble, only one had real trouble-a crash which knocked out both driver and mechanic.
