...badly that buckets must be placed strategically when it rains. The only furniture is a single high-backed wooden chair, a place of honor for such spiritual leaders as Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman. For most of its eight years, the cavernous mosque on the third floor of a white brick building along Jersey City's Kennedy Boulevard has attracted scant interest. "We are a peaceful people; we come here to pray," explains Mohammed Nagib, the spokesman for the mosque's 300 Sunni worshippers. "We do not bother anybody." Baltimore is no one's idea of an artistic Mecca -- maybe the last top-tier cultural icon to emerge there was Babe Ruth -- but for 30 seasons it has fostered a nonprofit theater of increasingly venturesome repertoire. Housed in a converted college building amid the rundown brick facades of downtown, Center Stage has debuted Eric Overmyer's On the Verge or The Geography of Yearning, a sprightly fantasy about three Victorian women explorers that became one of the most widely produced plays of the '80s; David Feldshuh's Miss Evers' Boys, a drama about government experiments on black victims...

...South Central Los Angeles, the intersection of Florence and Normandie where the videotaped beating of truck driver Reginald Denny took place, was lacerated anew last Monday. What started as a peaceful demonstration for the "L.A. 4," still awaiting trial for the Denny beating, degenerated into a melee of brick and bottle throwing that injured 12. This time, however, the L.A.P.D. piled in immediately. Three hundred officers in riot gear made 55 swift arrests, overwhelming the disorder. With both the Denny case and the Rodney King case coming up in February and March, odds are that L.A. police will continue...
