William Kelso disagreed. Unlike his colleagues, Kelso, a specialist in colonial American archaeology who began working for the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities in 1993, was convinced that the fort lay instead somewhere close to the brick church tower built in 1690, the only surviving structure from the colony's first century. So on April 4, 1994, he put his shovel in the ground, and less than an hour later turned up fragments of early 17th century ceramics. According to “The Harvard University Campus Guide,” the red-brick colonial was completed in 1721 as a dormitory for 60 students and tutors. (A currency free fall of that magnitude means, for instance, that in nominal terms, a single brick today costs more than a three-bedroom house with a swimming pool...
...this gesture of intimacy and friendship…Aux armes, artistes! After being refused entry to a small soiree at the Signet Friday night, two ne’er-do-wells registered their disappointment in a manner befitting Harvard’s refined society of arts and letters: a brick through the kitchen window. (Perhaps a sly, if tactless, F.O. Matthiessen reference?) Fortunately, wanna-be actors and playwrights aren’t exactly the strongest group, and the brick didn’t cause any significant damage…A certain marathon-running, Uncle Sam-loving senior went...
