In another time there was a drug rehabilitation center here. Neither is in operation any more, and the red brick buildings now resemble what one imagines would be left after the bomb. Creepers embellish low walls fashioned from mortar and smooth river rocks by some forgotten mason-an ax murderer...

...Sahara sandstorm, the little war in the Central African nation of Chad turned increasingly ominous and ugly last week. With the help of intensive Libyan bombing raids, rebel forces seized the northern town of Faya-Largeau (pop. 7,000). In the process, they reduced much of the mud-and-brick oasis to rubble. As many as one-third of the Chadian government's 3,000 soldiers were reported to be dead, wounded or captured, and hundreds more were stranded in the north. Instead Alice in Concert is rather densely packed with the musical numbers seeming to follow a patchwork order that lead to a somewhat muddled end. But the cast overcomes this one foible in the material, treating each number individually without trying to make each song blend into a climactic conclusion--which really never comes. Instead this production is more like a musical cabaret...
