...emphasize just how platonic the bond between Norma and Reuben is, Ritt marries her off to Sonny Webster (Beau Bridges), the archtype 'good ole boy.' Handsome but lethargic, this youthful Billy Carter barely peeps while his new bride flies about doing labor organizing with the self-described 'lefto' from Central Park West. Bridges tries valiantly to inject this regional stereotype with credibility but unfortunately, his Sonny comes off like a muscle-bound teddy-bear blessed with the patience of Baptist Mother Theresa. Supposedly a divorced father, Sonny behaves with such liberated understanding that it seems impossible any woman would depart...

...trouble was, the friends were vague about the ceremony. They said it took place last October on a mountainside outside Tokyo while Connors was nursing an ankle injury. Whatever happened in Japan, they were definitely married in a civil ceremony in February in St. Louis, from which area the bride and groom both hail. The retired Playmate is expecting in August...

She is accompanied by her Aunt Helen (Elizabeth Wilson), her older sister Andrea (Meryl Streep) and her mother Ruth (Nancy Marchand), an unresigned widow. (Colleen Dewhurst played Ruth for a few performances but withdrew because of a prior commitment.) A fifth woman distinctly jars this ostensibly patrician clan. Dixie Avalon (Dixie Carter) is a breezy, purse-swinging entertainer who has been hired by one of the absent menfolk to sing Oh Promise Me, apparently...

The glowing bride, Vittoria lanni, 22, received a papal buss and so did the nervous groom, Mario Maltese, 24. "May you have long life and may you see the sons of your sons," prayed the Pope in nuptial blessing. Later in the week, the Pope tuned in the state-owned second radio network to catch the premiere broadcast...

DEWITT: You question with the truculence of many drugged Republicans. Why don't you walk back to your car? There's more in Boris Karloff's monster in Bride of Frankenstein than in Interiors. God, what a wheeze-bag bore. I was embarrassed for Woody Allen. Oooh, were those actors acting. Oooh, spilling their guts out into the camera, "I'm so empty I'm so depressed I've got so much anger in me Watch me crack up Boo-hoo isn't life depressing Look at those waves I'm gonna walk into the surf Whoosh whoosh crash splash...
