...somewhat scarce in Love, Love, and Love. In far too many of these vignettes. Bernhard sounds like a Brat Pack novelist who thinks spare descriptions of lonely, confused people having sex, taking pills and spending money are inherently interesting. The longer pieces are rarely as insightful as the brief snippets, and the only identifiable story line--involving a disgruntled Parisian woman and her violent, international love life--falls particularly flat...

Spread across the bottom of the stage is a buzzing New Year's Eve party of Hollywood wannabes, at their center a failed scriptwriter turned kept man who is enjoying a brief and perilous brush with freedom. Hovering immediately above, in splendorous isolation, is the woman who keeps him, a Hollywood has- been turned loony recluse, stalking the ornate staircase of her pseudo palazzo in murderous rage. The juxtaposition is a miracle of stagecraft -- the weighty rococo mansion thrusts up and over the partygoers with noiseless ease -- and is also the signature moment of London's most anticipated theatrical event...

...ANGELES -- Celebrity profiles regularly read like glorified press releases, but Vanity Fair may have taken the concept a bit too far. The magazine's August issue contains a brief but gushing piece on director John Woo written by David Chute. Chute just happens to have been the unit publicist for Woo's forthcoming action film, Hard Target. In his story Chute quotes people who compare Woo to Sergio Leone, Michelangelo and Martin Scorsese. ...irony is that few Russians living in Estonia want to secede completely < from the Baltic state. Compared with the rest of the old Soviet empire, the economic reforms that Estonia has carried out in the brief period of independence are nothing short of miraculous. It is the only former Soviet republic with a stable, convertible currency, and the monthly rate of inflation has dropped in one year from 90% to 1.7%. Unless the rival ethnic communities can turn their present dialogue of the deaf into real cooperation, however, Estonia may yet succumb to the fever of nationalism that...

With the end of the cold war, the world's challenges are no less important or difficult, but they are murkier and more intractable. For a brief, triumphal moment, Western democratic capitalism seemed to have defeated all comers. Such elation was quickly replaced by a realization that the world's hardships and hatreds were hardly diminished by the end of the cold war. Standing up to the Soviets, while a daunting task and perhaps one oversimplified at the time, was in some ways less tricky than sorting out the collapse of Yugoslavia or dealing with a persistently sluggish global economy...
