Syracuse University has opted for a more touchy-feely approach. The school sends young female health educators to brief sororities on the dangers of excessive drinking. Associate dean Bergen-Cico presided over a recent session for 40 members of Alpha Chi Omega. Among other things, she told them what many already knew from personal experience: weight-conscious women tend to skip meals before drinking, to conserve calories, making them more easily affected by alcohol. One simple solution: make sure they eat a hearty meal before they hit the bars. Patrick Kilcarr of Georgetown finds that nutrition information...
...what would happen if Arafat were removed from the scene? Some not very encouraging clues have emerged from a major haul of files snatched by Israeli paratroopers during a brief reoccupation of Bethlehem last November. The papers were found in an office of Arafat's Fatah branch of the Palestine Liberation Organization and reveal the struggle that might ensue if he were ever forced to give up power. Israeli intelligence translated the files, and an index of the dossiers has been obtained by TIME. The papers reveal scandalous material on various underlings in the Fatah leadership, including evidence of adultery...
Today, just after 1:05 p.m., Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler will sing the national anthem before Pedro Martinez throws the first pitch of the 2002 Boston Red Sox season. Especially during the World Series, as military action had begun in Afghanistan, Francis Scott Key’s dramatic lyrics had renewed significance for generations of Americans...
When Conan O'Brien's sidekick quit his Late Night gig in 2000, the headlines might as well have read ANDY RICHTER LOSES MIND. Richter, 35, seemed the definition of a lucky stiff. An actor-comic whose brief pre-Conan resume included doing stage productions of Brady Bunch scripts, he was now being paid to sit on a couch, scope out the guests' jowls for plastic-surgery scars and make wisecracks. "There were some days when I would joke to people, 'If I play my cards right, I won't have to say a word tonight,'" he says...
...angrily to get out - or else. On the main track out of the village, young men bent over the hood of a car, their sidearms showing. One played with a two-way radio that was, a Georgian police escort remarked glumly, more modern than anything his men had. A brief visit to the Gorge, about three hours drive from Tbilisi, made it clear that the area was completely out of Georgian control. The escort, from the local police headquarters, admitted that he had been in the village - the edge of the village anyway - a few weeks ago, when...
