...mercenaries whom Mobutu himself had hired turned out to be largely a hit-and-run affair. Some 180 mercenaries of French Colonel "Bob" Denard's 6th Commandos, supported by Katanganese soldiers of the Congo army, moved into six towns, the most important being Bukavu and Kisangani. After several brief clashes with Mobutu's advancing regulars, the mercenaries last week commandeered 27 trucks and retreated toward the safety of interior Punia, halfway between Bukavu and Kisangani.
