...officials gave a rosier account of Schroeder's condition. They announced that his fever was subsiding and that he might be allowed to attend his son's wedding on March 16. They released photos showing Schroeder waving to Haydon. Schroeder was also treated to his first trip outdoors: a brief excursion to the hospital parking lot, from which he could glimpse the "transitional care" apartment building where he will live if he leaves the hospital. Two children rushed over to greet the famous patient. "It was like shaking hands with history," said Kim Nasief, 10, but she added...
...from Lebanon two weeks ago. But in the army's wake came new visitors to raise ominous questions about the region's future. Two days after the last Israeli convoy of some 40 vehicles had left Sidon (pop. 200,000), the largest city in southern Lebanon, there was a brief invasion of another kind. Into Sidon, by bus from Beirut, came a ragtag army of Shi'ite Muslim militants, swearing vengeance against Israel and Lebanon's Christian leadership and vowing to rebuild the country in the image of the Ayatullah Ruhollah Khomeini's Iran...
Director Woody Allen, Farrow and Jeff Daniels, who plays Tom, handle this moment as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Quite the contrary, said Volcker, the board is already reining back on an expansion of the money supply it began last fall to pull the economy out of a brief slowdown. The Commerce Department announced last week that the economy had bounced back and then some, growing at an annual rate of 4.9% in the final quarter of last year, much faster than anticipated...
Almost everybody agreed that there had been confusion over what was supposed to happen. Before the plane arrived, a South Korean official aboard apparently neglected to brief the Kim party on arrival procedures. A U.S. diplomat in Seoul said later that the South Koreans had "changed the plan several times, the last time being less than 30 minutes before Kim's plane arrived." The South Koreans are highly security conscious, all the more so since the 1983 incident in Rangoon, Burma, when several South Korean Cabinet ministers were killed by a bomb supposedly set by agents from Communist North Korea...
