The book confuses not only the mind but the emotions too, mixing so much to condemn with much to admire. The characters are presented in subjective flashes, bright, sensitive but jumbled; a psychological kaleidoscope. Speaking all their half-thoughts out loud, and many more of the author's, the mother coughs and booms, Daley sings, puppies whine, Clifford grumbles, Lena moans, a Chinaman squeaks, the doctor quacks . . . the reader de- spairs...
