...leaving medieval art lovers with expensive facsimile editions as a disappointing substitute. But in the Dutch town of Nijmegen, 60 km southeast of Utrecht, there's a rare opportunity to see the real thing. For the first time since the 15th century, brothers Herman, Paul and Jean Limbourg's brilliant and colorful miniature illuminations will be shown together at the Valkhof Museum in "The Limbourg Brothers, Nijmegen Masters at the French Court (1400-1416)" until Nov. 20. The exhibition shows four out of six surviving manuscripts, which the brothers illuminated while in residence at the Paris court from...

North Korea seems to have taken over the space in America's collective consciousness formerly occupied by the planet Mongo. Created by the brilliant cartoonist Alex Raymond, the distant Mongo, as ruled by the diabolical Ming the Merciless, a jaundiced and slant-eyed despot, perpetually plotted our destruction until Flash Gordon foiled its schemes. Substitute Kim Jong-Il for Ming, and nuclear weapons for invading spaceships, and you have a pretty good approximation of America's poor sense of an extremely closed and apparently hostile other world. With their roommates known well in advance, upperclassmen arrive at their Houses knowing exactly with whom they will eat and spend their time: their blockmates. Despite living in an incredibly diverse House community among the most brilliant young people on earth, most upperclassmen will not have met a single new person in the last two weeks. The reason is a simple one; Harvards system of blocking divides its student body in a way that makes it all but impossible for Houses to do their...

What I know not, as I shuttle between Robinson and Sever Halls, is whether our brilliant physics and math concentrators are as outlandish as reputed. My acquaintances do not confirm the rule, leading to the suspicion that the true aliens are all at MITbut before I graduate, I will be sure to shop as many advanced theoretical math lectures as possible in order to confirm that hypothesis. At the very least, I hope to finally experience a shopping week that will make me feel better about the stylishness of my concentration instead of irremediably worse...
