...Southerners saw red, or New Dealers cheered, Henry Wallace's speech was the first that riveted the delegates' attention. It was blunt, brave, tactless. It easily explained why Henry Wallace was the best-loved and best-hated man in the Stadium. Southerners got a heaping dose of brine in their open wounds as Henry Wallace, no longer ill at ease, rubbed in the word "liberal" eleven times in his brief platform appearance...

Back from a long, weary passage to India with war materials, a brine-streaked merchant vessel last week landed the largest shipment of Ceylon tea ever to arrive at New York. The cargo, 35,000 chests (over 3 million lb.) of tea (enough to last U.S. tea drinkers three weeks), is a part of the 65 million lb. in the U.S. quota under last April's British-American allocation agreement...

Until this spring, Dow drew all its magnesium from its inexhaustible brine wells at Midland, Mich. From these it is now extracting magnesium at the rate of 12,000 tons a year-26 times as much as in 1929. This spring Dow tapped a new source which has stirred everyone's imagination : it began mining sea water for magnesium at a great $15,000,000 plant at Freeport, Tex., which by year's end will be sucking in 12,000,000 gallons a day (enough water for a city of 120,000) and turning out 50 tons...
