...Britain's young literary lions, Andrew Norman Wilson, 38, has been busiest at marking his territory. Since the mid-1970s he has published eleven satiric novels, plus biographies of John Milton, Sir Walter Scott, Hilaire Belloc, and last year's much and justly praised Tolstoy. In addition, Wilson has written about Christian theology and religious affairs (How Can We Know?; The Church in Crisis...
...until last week did he announce the last of his 14 Cabinet appointments, but then his choice drew much praise. His selection: retired Admiral James Watkins, 60, an expert on nuclear power, former Chief of Naval Operations and once a long-shot prospect to become father-in-law of Britain's Prince Charles (Watkins' daughter Laura Jo had a romance with the Prince before marrying an American actor). It turned out that the mail was intended for American military personnel stationed in Britain and was unloaded at Heathrow Airport before the Pan Am plane's ill-fated takeoff for New York. But according to some West German reports, British investigators now suspect the bomb was planted by a worker at London's Heathrow Airport. British officials called the claim "pure speculation...
...wanting to miss a historic bash, Jan Morris has already booked a room in Hong Kong for July 1, 1997. That is the day when Britain's 99-year lease on the crown colony runs out and the People's Republic of China moves in. Except for replacing the Union Jack with its red banner, Beijing does not now plan any major redecorating. The island and its adjacent territories are to be designated a Special Administrative Region with authority to continue practicing their unfettered style of economic individualism...
