Rock is good for rage, lust and protest. But for angst, yearning and existential misery, nothing beats the blues. That's why many young musicians are adding a blue tint to new albums such as British-born screecher PJ Harvey's "To Bring You My Love," Houston native Chris Whitley's "Din of Ecstasy" and Louisianan Chris Thomas' "21st Century Blues From Da Hood."TIME critic Christopher John Farleysays Harvey's music lacks "subtlety or grace," while Whitley's album is "painfully, almost uncomfortably honest." But it's not all bad. Farley says Thomas' work features a "crunching beat, brash...
...still another collection of wide-ranging essays that he calls "neurohistories," an anecdotal form that combines science, sympathy and old-fashioned storytelling. Where most clinicians study at arm's length a case of amnesia, say, or autism or agnosia (inability to recognize a word or a shape), the British-born physician tries to see through the eyes of the patient. "The study of disease," says Sacks, "demands the study of identity, the inner worlds that patients, under the spur of illness, create...
...owned by Di Mambro in Morin Heights, 50 miles northwest of Montreal, where five bodies were found. Two were wearing red-and-gold medallions bearing a double-headed eagle and the initials T.S., for Temple Solaire, one name for Jouret's group. Three others -- a Swiss man and his British-born wife, both former sect members, and their three-month-old son -- bore stab wounds...
...redhead who attracted suitors with remarkable ease, the British-born aristocrat had married and divorced Winston Churchill's son Randolph by the time she was 25. The young Mrs. Churchill spent the rest of her 20s and 30s spinning around the London-Paris-Antibes social orbit, bedding other wealthy and powerful men. They included journalist Edward R. Murrow and Italian mogul Gianni Agnelli, whom Ogden describes -- Jackie Collins-style -- as looking "so luscious" to Harriman when they first met that "her knees trembled." Ultimately, Agnelli, a lothario, refused to marry her, which hurt Harriman deeply...
MEDICINE/PHYSIOLOGY British-born Richard Roberts, 50, now of New England Biolabs, and Phillip Sharp, 49, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, won for their 1977 discovery of "junk DNA." As the cell's master molecule, DNA carries the blueprints needed to make proteins. Roberts and Sharp found that genes -- the subdivisions corresponding to different proteins -- are usually not single sections of DNA, as once believed, but discrete chunks, interrupted by stretches of nonsense DNA that seem to have no function. In protein making, only the pieces of meaningful DNA are copied and then spliced together. The splicing can go awry...
