...Soviet anthology of spy stories contains a stirring Abel call for KGB recruits. "The best representatives of our youth are going into intelligence work that requires the creative acquisition of the Marxist-Leninist theory, a general educational background and a broad spiritual outlook." That might seem questionable to Russians who witnessed the demonstration against the Czechoslovak invasion in Red Square last August, when a gang of young KGB operatives brutally mauled the demonstrators...
...tell Producer-Director Harold Prince that Zorba isn't Jewish. Prince could not resist the temptation to try to fashion a sequel to his own Fiddler on the Roof, thinly camouflaged with a Greek accent. The resulting musical play is sleek, professional and synthetic, a brassy bit of Broad-wayana that is as far from the Mediterranean basin as is Shubert Alley...
JERRY JEFF WALKER: MR. BOJANGLES (ATCO). A zestful romp of a first album by a 27-year-old graduate of the rock group Circus Maximus. The boundaries of Walker's country style are broad enough to take in rock, ballads and the blues. His targets include the Vatican, divorce and the draft ("I have but one country to give for my life"). The spirit is so infectious that even squares may applaud the lines...
...Broad Backs. Though an unabashed paean to the mystique of pro football, the movie performs a mild disservice to the athletes themselves. Plimpton wrote of football players as sensitive people, worried about injuries and the challenge of younger, faster rookies, fearful of the day when the team could no longer use them, always inwardly satisfied by the crisp precision of a well-executed play. The Lions, playing themselves with obvious relish in the film, live up to the unfortunate image that the public expects-cretinous, backslapping behemoths...
...involved in a discussion which should have a significant impact on our community. There is basic agreement among HUC members concerning those broad concepts endorsed Monday night, which thus far include 1) popular election of student representatives, 2) a student review board for each department to assist in tenure decisions, 3) student participation on faculty-administration committees only when assured of the right to participate in the decision itself, and 4) student-Senior Common Room participation in the nomination of Masters. I sincerely hope that we will be able to realize our goals once our proposals are finalized and completed...
