...still other critics, the objection to draft exemption goes deeper than the war and involves the broader question of the clergy's relation to secular society. In their view, exemption from service, like the old "clergyman's discount" at stores, unfairly and unnecessarily sets the cleric apart as a privileged member of society. Some seminarians even feel that their exemption stigmatizes them in the eyes of others as suspected draft dodgers. Still another argument against exemption is that clergymen, if faced with the real challenge of whether or not to serve, would be forced to evaluate more searchingly...
Castro realizes all too painfully that his own campaign in Latin America-in the form of his vicious little "wars of liberation"-has been a dismal failure. Russia's new emphasis on broader trade and diplomatic relations can only further hamper that campaign. For their part, the men in power in Latin America see it as an opportunity to drive an even deeper wedge between Moscow and Havana, and possibly even get Russia to tone down Cuba's guerrilla wars. Reston's publicity, too, which thus far has been directed at middle and upper-middle income groups, will change as the availability of lower-priced homes increases...
Part of his problem is a rhetorical one. His speech is filled with heavy, meaningless phrases such as "historical relationships," "long, hard look," "broader understanding," or "great future significance." His responses usually begin with a "Well..." soon followed by a vague "and consesequently." When he anticipates the end of a rough sentence, his pace quickens and his tone of voice rises, as though he were a student, completing with relief an inadequate answer and trying to imply how simple the question was, and how clear the reply...
