France has absorbed waves of immigrants from many countries. Those newcomers came from a broad spectrum of the economic and political landscape, yet eventually most of them assimilated into the French population. Why is that not happening with the Muslim community? Muslims were welcomed and provided with government assistance that they would never have received in their own Islamic countries. Last Tuesday Congress took the first, difficult step towards evaluating the need for U.S. troops in Iraq. In a 79-19 bipartisan vote, the Senate passed a broad defense policy bill which included language saying that 2006 “should be a period of significant transition to full Iraqi sovereignty.” The bill also calls for the Bush administration to furnish Congress with progress reports on the need for U.S. troops every three months.
