Martin Short makes his first appearance onstage at the top of a lavish Hello Dolly staircase - with his head cut off by the top of the proscenium. It's a fitting way to get things started, since Fame Becomes Me, his slick, scattered, very funny new Broadway musical, is all about showbiz ego being cut down to size. Short calls it a one-man show - but five terrific performers are on hand to share the spotlight (and on occasion upstage him). He bills it as the story of his life - troubled childhood, years of hoofing in Broadway chorus lines...
...seventh Nizam, was believed to be the world's richest man-in 1949 the New York Times estimated his fortune at more than $2 billion. Over seven generations, the jewelry-mad Nizams had built up an unparalleled collection of gems: their pearls alone, the Times reported, would "pave Broadway from Times Square to Columbus Circle." But the Nizams' obsession with stuffing their dank chambers with priceless diamonds and then forgetting all about them seems, in retrospect, like a symptom of a deep-rooted anxiety about the dynasty's security. Shortbus could be called the first middle-class porno movie, but that description wouldn't be fair to this engaging study of love and lust from John Cameron Mitchell, star and author of the off-Broadway hit Hedwig and the Angry Inch. At the film's center is Sofia (Sook-Yin Lee), a sex therapist who gets no kick from sex. She and her friends illustrate, amusingly and quite graphically, the way the artist class of post-9/11 urbanites gropes toward intimacy. Not weird enough...
...prevention poster or ad campaign geared to sexually active seniors. In many cases, those people may need the information as much as the young do. "People who no longer have to worry about pregnancy don't see the need for a condom," says Jeanine Reilly, executive director of Broadway House, an AIDS service group in Newark, N.J. Indeed, the ACRIA survey showed that 33% of older folks who were sexually active in the previous three months did not engage in safer...
