Skaggs blinked. Occupied by his own overheated thoughts, he had hardly registered the presence of the city, let alone its people. He saw now that he was in the crowd huddling along Broadway, waiting for a landau and a city wagon to pass. In the landau were a pair of rich ladies dressed for a party, each smiling and holding a tiny candle out the windows of the carriage. Piled in the wagon were dozens of street carcasses--mostly dogs, some rats and cats, a couple of pigs, the whole heap covered in an inch of lime, which sifted...

...girl giggled now at this funny American and started furiously brushing away the dirty feathers and bits of dried manure from the patch of Broadway in front of him, making the odors and motes rise and swirl as she cleared a place for him to step. When she came for her wage, he noticed that his writing pencil was still gripped tight in his hand, so he ceremoniously placed both it and a penny in the girl's open palm. She glanced up quizzically, registered his smile, winked her good eye and plunged the pencil like a bodkin into...

...those confused by the strange sight of suddenly friendly American and North Korean diplomats hitting a Broadway show together in New York this week, take comfort that in Asia Pyongyang is still a diplomatic migraine. As part of the agreement reached in the Six-Party talks last month, Japan and North Korea met yesterday and today in Hanoi for bilateral discussions aimed at normalizing relations between the two nations. (Like the U.S., Japan has never established official diplomatic connections with North Korea.) But while American negotiator Christopher Hill happily characterized his meetings with the North Koreans earlier this week...

With lyrics like those, Truth in Translation will probably not be going to Broadway. The musical, which dramatizes the work of translators at South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, is going to far more interesting places. Since opening in Rwanda last August, it has played Johannesburg and Cape Town, and is now set for runs in Liberia, the Balkans and Northern Ireland, before ending up way off Broadway at the basement Colonnades Theater Lab in New York City. Director and Colonnades founder Michael Lessac says his aim is to tell the story of an "evolutionary step for humanity...

...most harrowing battle scene in Journey's End, R.C. Sherriff's 1928 play about World War I now being revived on Broadway, comes with the stage entirely emptied of people. We're in a dugout in the British trenches in France, and two officers have just left to lead a dangerous raid into the German front lines. They must make a dash of 70 yards, grab a prisoner and return. All we hear is the offstage sound of explosions, machine-gun fire, the shouts of men. A puff of smoke wafts in from outside. Then it's over...
