...floor of an office skyscraper, a tough-looking man strides, radiating corporate menace. Inside his swank office, he detects danger from outside, and in a moment his colleague has been shot. Running toward the office window, he leaps out, head first, his face a mesh mosaic of broken plastic, as if it were a crushed stained-glass mask. He lands on the adjacent building the shots came from, using his own artillery to dispatch several of his would-be killers, including one with a bullet that can turn corners. Alone and triumphant, he hears a voice from afar saying, "They...

...power plant fell into disrepair. By the time U.S. engineers returned to the powerhouse in 2002, it was squeezing out just 3 MW, and even that only because of the efforts of the head Afghan engineer, Rasul Baqi. He and the few remaining engineers improvised, hammering crude approximations of broken parts out of scrap metal and piecing together electrical lines with barbed wire. Climate change is a unique challenge because if the dire predictions turn out to be right, our planet - and our civilization - might no longer be recognizable. We remain frustratingly incapable of nailing down how much warming we'll experience over the next century...

After expressing interest in the idea initially, Obama has since backed away, saying he will meet McCain for only one joint town hall, on July 4, when few Americans will be huddled around a television set to watch politics. McCain rejected the counteroffer as insufficient. The negotiations have since broken down, and the two sides are trading blame. "We made a serious counterproposal," Obama spokesman Bill Burton says. "They are content to snipe from the sidelines...
