...Friday, with the convention ended, eleven policemen swarmed up to the McCarthy headquarters. They claimed that the volunteers had tossed smoked fish, ashtrays and beer cans at the helmeted cops below. With neither evidence nor search warrant, they clubbed McCarthy campaign workers. One cop actually broke his billy club on a volunteer's skull. Daley stood by his angry defense of his cops' conduct against the "terrorists," who, he snarled, "use the foulest of language that you wouldn't hear in a brothel house...

...where there are 150,000 French Basques. Though generally less restive than their brethren in Spain, many French Basques firmly endorse the drive for independence and rarely miss a chance to let Charles de Gaulle know it. On the day he proclaimed, "Vive le Québec libre!", Basques broke out signs reading "Vive Euzkadi libre!" As the wooden buildings broke into flames, 100 M.P.s marched into the stockade with night sticks and tear gas. By the time the gas cleared, one prisoner was dead, his skull crushed, 23 were hospitalized, and 35 more needed treatment for lesser wounds. In addition, five guards, including the garrison commander, were in the hospital...

...ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERDS. The scene fairly breathes piety and tranquillity. Indeed, the painting is one of the most popular masterpieces owned by Washington's National Gallery. Yet the question of who did it is surrounded by acrimony. Art Dealer Joseph Duveen and Critic Bernard Berenson broke off their friendship after an argument over whether it is by Giorgione or by his protégé, Titian. The scarcity of Giorgione's work compounds the problem. He died in his early 30s, and left behind only six or seven paintings. Thus, when Duveen bought The Adoration, he preferred...
