...commodore's difficulties are complicated by the shoals of odd fish that abound in even so small a puddle as Farbridge. There are "fierce, gay anarchists," mothers of prodigies, blustering M.P.s, professional yokels, degenerate nobility, gumshoes in broom closets, harridans in cholers, blond giants with Chinese grandmothers, hard-faced Communists who gnaw rock-cakes at their meetings; in all, as fair a mess of stage Englishmen as have recently been caught in one volume...
...Eleventh, containing most of city's Negro population nearly all its organized labor and some of its finest homes, had been almost solidly Democratic since New Deal days. One of the exceptions was in 1946, when Bakewell was swept into Congress for one term by the new Republican broom. This time, Candidate Bakewell had a ready-made campaign issue. It sounds like dust and cobwebs; what it turns out to be is a broom. With great impish strokes and elaborate flourishes-and winking and singing as he works-Christopher Fry (see below) sweeps the prosy and the plausible off the boards for an hour. It is the performance of a fellow who not only knows how to handle a broom, but at intervals can ride off on the broomstick...
...attempted assassination of President Truman brought swift action from Mufioz Marin. Crying "This is lunatic gangsterism," he ordered Albizu Campos brought in at all costs. Police threw tear gas into Albizu's beleaguered headquarters. From the balcony, Albizu waggled a soiled white towel on the end of a broom in token of surrender...
