...first cross country run, held yesterday afternoon, brought out 122 men. The whole squad went together under W. G. Clerk '01, E. W. Mills 3S., and O. W. Richardson 2L., as leaders. A medium pace was taken and there was no break at the finish. The course was up Oxford street beyond Porter Station to the brick church and back to the Gymnasium by Massachusetts avenue. After the kick-off the second team took the ball to the substitutes' ten yard line and tried eight plays against their defense. While the choice of players went on, little attempt was made to develop team play. The men were brought into the best possible form of individual play and it was not until then that the modelling of the team as a whole began. Just before the Bates game, however, the coaches began to get the most promising candidates to work together, especially on the defense. W. H. Lewis L. S. '95 and B. G.
