South African Policy I found your coverage of the Zimbabwean situation informative but sad [Aug. 3]. The South African government could easily bring Mugabe into line instead of propping him up. Recall how Balthazar Johannes Vorster brought Ian Smith into line and forced a free and fair election. All authorities recognize the last Zimbabwean one wasn't, and yet Mugabe is still in a strong position of authority. Shame on you, South Africa! Peter Graham, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA
...past 20 years. A British diplomat who attended the trial described her demeanor in court as "calm, dignified [and] upright, exuding quiet authority but no hint of bitterness towards the prosecution." She retreats into isolation once again, leaving one question unanswered. If Than Shwe and his men are ever brought to trial, how calm and dignified will they...
Still, Morgan says he doesn't buy into the idea "that Bud Billings brought this on himself." He points to the fact that Bud and Melanie "opened their home and fortunes" to their adopted brood as proof of their charitable side. But, when he got to Israeli border control, he was shocked to discover that his Canadian passport was stamped "Palestinian Authority Only." "Last time they came, they visited Acre, Haifa, Jerusalem - the whole country...
...members who broke with the movement over its decision to join in the political process of the Palestinian Authority by running for election in 2006. They were bolstered, according to Palestinian observers, by jihadist elements from other Arab countries, taking advantage of the widespread despair and frustration in Gaza brought on by the ongoing economic siege. While Hamas is currently enforcing the cease-fire it adopted seven months ago at the close of Israel's Gaza invasion, the economic siege remains largely in place - although if Egyptian-mediated negotiations over the fate of captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit are successfully...
