Those numbers, researchers say, may now be on the rise. Historically, economic hardship has often corresponded with increases in child abuse, says Dr. Carole Jenny, a professor of pediatrics at Brown University and an expert in identifying and treating victims of child abuse, who authored a commentary in The Lancet. In the past six months, Jenny says she has seen increases in rates of maltreatment and heard similar reports from her colleagues. "I imagine that as the economy worsens, [child-abuse specialists are] only going to be more and more busy," she says, adding that the recession will likely mean...

...protect trade, says Brisset. Things have grown worse since China's suppression of riots in Tibet in March, which prompted Sarkozy to call on Beijing to "end the violence" there. Sarkozy suggested he might boycott the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, a course of action taken by both Brown and Merkel. But after French companies in China weathered months of protests and boycotts by infuriated Chinese nationalists Sarkozy turned up at the Games opener claiming that France's role as E.U. president obliged him to make an appearance...

...title and a 9-1 season. In other words, Siedlecki restored the luster to a program that was sorely lacking, taking it about as high as one can go in the Ivies. And, as he showed, he can win games—the Bulldogs beat co-champion Brown this season, and their first three losses in this year’s 6-4 campaign were by a combined seven points...
