The generation of Pollock and Kline had eliminated the figure; their canvases derived impact and emotion from the visible signs of struggle left by the painter's drips, splashes and violent brush marks. The "color field" painters of the 1950s, led by the late Morris Louis, eliminated the mark of the painter's hand, but their veils of color floating within the rectangle of a canvas aimed at evoking a haunting, lyric sense of other-worldly beauty. Worst of the blazes was in Orange County, just south of Los Angeles. Feeding on sere brush, the flames romped through cordons thrown up by 1,400 firemen and raced toward the wealthy residential areas of Lemon Heights, Cowan Heights, Villa Park and Orange Park Acres. Hundreds of residents were routed; 52 buildings were destroyed, most of them houses-some costing...

Total RBIs: four. One would have been enough. On the mound now was Boston's other ace, Jim Lonborg, fully rested and feeling mean. Always the possessor of a smoking fastball, Lonborg had only a so-so record until the spring when Pitching...
