...years people have accused Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori of running a brutal and authoritarian government right out of a dictator's textbook. But last week Fujimori's regime morphed from a monolith into a weird, militarized soap opera, and it seemed no one, perhaps not even Fujimori, understood how the plot was unfolding. Was the President still running the show? Was he resigning, as he suddenly promised? Would he, as he declared, really clean up the thuggish security apparatus that had done so much to blacken his administration's name? Would the nation's powerful military back him or revolt...

Nader has often been called bossy as well. And he actually was my boss for several years in the 1970s. It's a different kind of bossiness--more an insistence that you see reason and therefore give up all frivolous pleasures in life and less a brutal demand that you bend to his will. But I have seen Nader convince a roomful of young adults, albeit briefly in most cases, that they want to dedicate their lives to irritating others for the general good. Whereas Buchanan's general approach is to aggravate the irritations you are feeling about others...

Round 1 went to Australia: a brutal punch thrown by Thorpe at 400 m. In his specialty race, Thorpe lowered his world record and won by something just under a week (actually, by 2.81 sec., with a time of 3:40.59). Round 2 was just as large a mismatch in the women's 4 x 100-m freestyle relay. Australia, after starting hot, cooled to sixth. The U.S. set a world record, and anchor Jenny Thompson, in superb form, won her sixth Olympic gold medal, moving ahead of speed skater Bonnie Blair for most golds ever by an American woman...

...UConn is other national contender in the northeast region. The No. 25 Huskies (3-3-1), who made the national title game in 1997, have struggled thus far with a tough schedule that includes national powers Santa Clara, Penn State, Stanford, and Nebraska. The schedule will get even more brutal when the Huskies play at Harvard on October 25th...

DANNI ASHE, above, and CINDY MARGOLIS, both comely Internet coquettes, have been engaged in a brutal war over who owns the title of Most Downloaded Woman. Margolis, who appears scantily clad--but clad--on her website, has been downloaded 7 million times, while Ashe, who poses nude, has been downloaded 8 million times. (Some people use the Internet for pornography.) On numbers, the Guinness Book of World Records awarded the crown to Ashe. Seems fair, but Margolis countered that her images are available for free, while Ashe's require a subscriber fee. Logically that makes Ashe even more deserving...
