When Bridget Kerrigan pinned up her flag in her dorm room window two weeks ago, she perhaps did not anticipate that so many Harvard students would associate her flag with centuries of brutal lynchings and dehumanization. That the flag is the symbol of choice for the Ku Klux Klan, and a symbol which few southern Blacks can embrace with pride, may have escaped her and the others currently displaying the flag. ...austere thriller with one lingering mystery: Why was it shelved? Did the old husband -- brutal, impotent, self-deluding -- offer the Chinese rulers a disturbing mirror image of themselves? Did Ju Dou's child -- twisted, ruthless, utterly inhuman -- remind the authorities uncomfortably of the '60s Red Guard? Maybe the film was deemed too sexy for Chinese viewers. ...Right-wing assassins in South Africa have found a brutal, high-tech way to punish their enemies: send them a booby-trapped tape player. On Feb. 15, such a Walkman-type device took the life of Bheki Mlangeni, a human-rights lawyer. The real target of the deadly package was Dirk Coetzee, a former policeman who now supports the African National Congress and lives in exile in Zambia. Coetzee testified last summer that former colleagues on the South African police force were behind the hit-squad deaths of several A.N.C. activists. The parcel bomb was sent to Coetzee in Lusaka...
