...polite. In the two months since he announced his candidacy, Forbes has inched up to second place in New Hampshire, where most polls show him with about 10% of the g.o.p. vote vs. front runner Bob Dole with 37%. And in Iowa, Forbes is tied for second with Pat Buchanan and Phil Gramm at 7%, according to a poll of likely caucus participants by PSI, a research firm. That's largely because of message and money. Forbes, who heads the magazine-publishing company founded by his grandfather, has been writing generous checks for compelling commercials in those states. Having spurned...

...Buchanan's campaign beat the sun to the New Hampshire secretary of state's office, arriving at 5 a.m. this morning to file for the leadoff primary. "New Hampshire is going to be the breakthrough state for the Buchanan campaign," the candidate declared after paying the requisite $1,000 filing fee. Candidates have two weeks to file for the February 20 vote, but the Buchananites weren't shivering in the cold alone. ...BUCHANAN A HUEY LONG FOR THE '90S? Your comparison could not be more misleading. Louisiana Governor and U.S. Senator Huey Long dedicated his life to helping people who could not help themselves. He worked hard to shrink the gap between rich and poor in Louisiana. Buchanan's approach is just the opposite, and his meanspirited ideas can only bring about a more divided nation, with the rich at one end and the forgotten poor at the other. America, down here in Louisiana, we knew Huey Long. Huey Long was a friend of ours. Pat Buchanan is no Huey Long. MATTHEW...
